“Flos Carmeli? Where’s that?”

That’s what I usually hear whenever I’m asked where I finished elementary and high school. Well, I can’t help it if Flos Carmeli Institution of Quezon City (FCIQC) is not popular since:

    * it’s in a far place - West Fa(i)rview, QC
    * it has no connections with popular schools
    * it has no “blockbuster” student which proudly declares his FCIQC roots

Actually, there are many popular (?) people that came from FCIQC. There’s the Yllana brothers. Yes, Anjo, Jomari, and John Ryan are all products of FCIQC. Calvin Millado, the well-known singer, also came from here. And most probably the currently very known among the list is Junjun Cabatu who is now a popular PBA Player with the Welcoat Dragons.

Just recently, I was able to return to FCIQC to watch my younger brother finish his high school. It’s amazing to see that we both came from this school and up until now is still not known. Mater Carmeli, the school a bit farther from Lagro, is even more popular!

As I returned to FCIQC, I noticed the big changes it had compared to our student times there. Only a few years have passed since the school changed administration. During our times, a nun was leading the school. Now… I do not know except that, according to my brother, the owner also manages Kowloon House (yummy!).

Only a few teachers that I know (and know me too) remain. Since the admin change, even the teachers packed their stuff. It’s sad because I loved those teachers of mine. They’re really outstanding and they have had many students whom they really influenced… some even from the 1976 batch!

Even the whole place had a major change. It’s OK since it now looks better. But, the field is now gone… it became a very large restaurant.

FCIQC is still beautiful. Maybe I’m not too familiar with all these “upgrades”. I’m more accustomed to the old version wherein only the field walkways are cemented, the canteen is small and the students have to rush to get seats, and the “First Friday Mass” area is in front and not at the basketball court.

Hayy… I hope FCIQC becomes popular… there are a lot of changes already!

I graduated there class of 2003! Elementary! I was going to finish high school there up until I had to move here in America. There’s tons of stuff that I loved and miss in that school. When I go to Philippines for vacation Im going to try to visit and look for teachers I know and hopefully they are still there even just a hand full of them. I remember I played for Varsity Men’s Volleyball during my 6th grade year. I really miss this school and hope that I become popular and I’ll represent this school.

I went there from 1980-1986 and that was when Sister Fidelis was the principal. It’s been more than 20 years since I’ve seen that school. As far as I can remember, that school was my alma mater as a kid. I was even the corp commander of the TCC (Traffic Control Committee)…I can’t believe I still remember that. Anyway, I’m just glad it’s still there even though they’ve expanded to high school level. Just wished it’d be good to find out what happened to Sister Fidelis….

Please correct this:

“That’s what I usually here whenever I’m asked….”

The word should be “hear” and not “here” as you had typed.

Now I know why that is school isn’t so popular.
